Csrss.exe Removal: How to Safely Remove this Virus or Trojan
Csrss.exe is normally an assuming little Windows program. It resides in the background—in the c:\windows\system32 directory (for NT, c:\winnt\system32)—and is a critical component to Windows. Hackers take advantage of programs like this because they can fool an unsuspecting user into believing that their Csrss.exe (usually disguised as something else) is a legit one. Csrss.exe removal should ONLY take place if it is found outside of the \system32 folder.
In order to understand the basics of Csrss.exe removal, let’s briefly explain how the virus usually behaves. Open your task manager (alt + Ctrl + Delete); click the “processes” tab and, then click the “memory”, “cpu” or “memory usage” tab to arrange the different processes by the amount of memory being used. Press it until the higher numbers are on top.
Now, look for any file named Csrss.exe. Normally, it will be farther down the list—as this program typically is not using much memory. Things like Internet Explorer or Firefox will be at or near the top. When you find Csrss, verify that it is in the System32 directory—sometimes you will have to right click>properties. If it checks out good, any other Csrss.exe program that you find is definitely a virus or Trojan. You’ll need some form of Csrss.exe removal utility.
Finding a trustworthy Csrss.exe removal application
A few trustworthy sites are Tucows.com, download.cnet.com, or Pcworld.com to find a Csrss.exe removal tool. Those sites are internationally-trusted by even large corporations, and offer a huge range of freeware and shareware. They also host consumer reviews, advisories and help forums. “Registry Mechanic” is known to be good—so are Spyware Doctor, Zero Spyware and Webroot 2010. All of the latest and greatest titles should have at least one Csrss.exe removal function.
Most of the best virus/malware Csrss.exe removal tools are shareware: they give you so many days to use it and then you have to register and/or buy. If you have in-depth knowledge of your Window’s Registry, by all means—try to locate the file there and kill it. However, you probably already know that it may be listed as a completely different filename—just to avoid detection.
Either way, it’s critical that you get this virus off your system. Not only will it cause conflicts among other applications, it will also be an invasion of your privacy. This includes any bank account, credit card or debit card numbers you may type into your computer.
